This work is inspired by the Welsh Heritage of mining manufacturing and represents coal, copper, gold, silica, iron and steel. Acrylics on stretched canvas under-frame., the background represents the ruddy earth whilst basic colours have been layered with palette knive, mixed and scraped across the surface to represent seams of underground elements, giving a very tactile surface. Real 24ct goldleaf has been applied to show that amongst these strong raw materials, seams of gold lay waiting for the enthusiastic prospector. Now mainly history of the 19th century we must not forget the toil and torment of the workers pitting themselves against the earth perils as they descent and work their way along passageways fearful of water rising, rocks falling and dangerous gases ever present. This is part of a series of three, the second representing the flowers, produce, sheep and beef: the third representing the coast, sea, fish, cockles and lava bread.
